South Side Speaks

I wanted to share with you some really neat things that God is doing in our journey to plant and pastor a church in Pittsburgh:

  1. South Side Speaks – This past week we decided on a name for our neighborhood group.  Let me remind you what our neighborhood group really is.  First of all, our neighborhood group is located at Bruegger’s Bagel on the corner of East Carson St. and 18th St. in South Side.  We meet on Thursday’s at 7pm except when we will be conducting outreaches.  Those times we will more than likely meet at 6pm.  The purpose of this group is to serve and be a blessing to our community.  Our goal is not to try and invite or tell people about our church, but rather to serve people and do what we can to let them know that there are people out there who genuinely do care about them.  Our goal is to serve!  With that said, we decided to name our neighborhood group, “South Side Speaks”.  The thought behind this name is that we want to be a voice of Life and transformation in the South Side!  Through our serving, we can hopefully impact the community in such a way that the “voice” of South Side Speaks will deposit seeds and leave marks of God’s love all throughout our community.  We will be putting together a website for South Side Speaks very soon.  Be on the look out for it!
  2. LifeStone Staff - God has answered some major prayers over the last two weeks in the area of our future staff at LifeStone Church.  We are thanking the Lord that He has allowed us to bring on board an Administrative Assistant and an Outreach Director.  More on these individuals and positions later.
  3. Spiritual Breakthrough Retreat – This weekend Allison Park Church housed their amazing and transforming ministry called “Spiritual Breakthrough Retreat”.  This weekend brought over 90 people who were dealing with tough stuff that could be considered addictions, bondage to sin, destructive habits, relational abuse, bitterness, etc.  There were also people there who were just hungry for more of God and wanted to grow in their relationship with Him.  Jeff Leake’s teaching and coaching people through these areas was amazing.  The personal prayer moments with prayer leaders was tremendous too.  Breakthrough happened, chains were broken, clouds were lifted, hope was given, and Jesus transformed lives.  One thing I learned from this weekend was, we will need a breakthrough ministry like this at LifeStone Church.  In our South Side location, we will be ministering to people who have life-controlling issues, addictions, and habits.  We will be ministering to people who are trying to escape thier problems by running to South Side.  This is a community that does contain a lot of of these types of problems and I really believe that a spiritual breakthrough ministry similar to this would be an effective and life-changing ministry for people.  Stay tuned to see how this will surface in the structure of LifeStone Church.

All in all, God is really advancing our group and bringing awesome people to team up with us!  We are praying for more growth and more opportunities for ministry!  If you are interested in joining South Side Speaks, you can email me at jackt@allisonparkchurch.com or you can just comment on this blog!  We would love to get you plugged in!

A Great Team

Let’s be honest, if you are a great leader, you have a great team around you!  Isn’t that true?  Great leaders don’t fly solo.  They have teams of fantastic people who are holding their ladder, so to speak.  I am reading a book by Samuel Chand about the responsibility of a leader to build a team around him/her.  Picture yourself on a ladder 30 feet in the air.  First of all, you wouldn’t think about climbing that ladder without someone holding the base of, right?  As God is taking us leaders to new and higher levels of leadership and influence, we must have people that we trust, that have strength, that are focused, that are committed, etc.  They must be the right people.  I don’t consider myself a great leader, but I do consider myself a growing leader.  I have a team right now who is helping Jamie and I plant this church and I have to say, I am so proud to be leading and serving with them!  We are growing it seems just about every week and the excitement and passion for this community, is not only huge, but it seems to be contagious!  I love that!  Don’t ever underestimate the power and influence of building a team.  It is very important especially in planting a church, but it should be a lot of fun too!  We have such a great team with us!  If you are interested in joining this team that is reaching the city of Pittsburgh and specifically the community of South Side, please contact me and we would be honored to connect with you.

We currently meet at Bruegger’s Bagel on East Carson St. in the South Side at 7pm.  If you just want to drop by and say hi, or even sit down and join the outreach planning and conversation, you are more than welcome!

Networking and Church Planting

Today was a great day!  In fact, if you had followed my twitter at any point today, you probably saw that I was at many different churches tweeting like a mad-man (what’s new, right?).  I traveled along with eight church interns , one current MCM pastor, and a future MCM church pastor to every location to see and experience what God is up to through this amazing network in Pittsburgh.  We left around 10am and didn’t get back to Allison Park Church until around 6pm.  It was a long day, but it was very fruitful!  Let me take a moment and explain what this was all about. Each church was either planted by assisted or started out of Allison Park Church.  There are a total of eight churches and Lifestone Church in March of 2010 will be the 9th church to be planted out of APC.  The 10th church plant is also in the works for the Fall of 2010.  So needless to say, Holy Spirit is working in amazing ways in this great city! While at each church, we were able to hear from the pastor about their heart for the community in which they serve and we also got to experience the atmosphere of the church itself.

While on this church tour today, it got me thinking about the Kingdom impact a church planting network really can make!  I am certainly in awe of what God is doing in and through the MCM and I am seeing first hand the result of God’s provision, blessing, creativity and heart for his people, but I am also astounded at how people can strengthen and propel each other into Kingdom advancement.  I was talking to a good friend of mine the other day who is in no way directly connected to this network of church planting in Pittsburgh.  As I was sharing with him what is happening here, he asked a question that made me think about what tremendous power is in a network like this.  He said, “Jack, how come no other churches around the country are doing what you guys are doing in Pittsburgh?” That question caused me to think about what God could actually do if church planting networks began to pop up all over this great country and started making dreams and visions come true for people who feel called to plant a church.  What if we began to invest leadership and finances into these networks?  What if churches stepped out of their boxes of “inward growth” and began take giant leaps of faith by investing in church planting?  Yes, God is going to do great things through church planting networks like these, but God also wants us to do great things too!!!  Disclaimer: You better give him the glory for those great things, but God still wants to see you experience huge victories as you plant churches, network leaders, reach cities, save souls, rescue the oppressed and help the hurting.

Can you imagine what God could do and what we could do if more churches/pastors got a vision to reach their cities by planting churches???  We would have “MCM” type of networks in hundreds of cities all doing the same thing, making disciples and watching Jesus build HIS church!  If you don’t believe me, just a take a journey out to Pittsburgh sometime and let me take you around to show you the Kingdom impact church planting has made and is making!

If you are interested in planting a church or being a part of what God is doing in our new church coming in March, please get in touch with me.  I would love to talk with you and hear your heart!

God’s power is in church planting, do doubt!  But people coming together, linking arms, supporting each other, helping each other and networking for God’s Kingdom to go forward…….there is power in that too!!!!

Lifestone Church Update

Our transition to Pittsburgh and Allison Park Church has been absolutely fantastic!  We are well under way to clearing the path for a new church this March.  I thought I would share a couple of things that God has been up to in the birth and formation of Lifestone Church.

  1. Launch Date: Our launch date was origionally set for April 4 (Easter Sunday), 2010.  We have decided to move that date up to March 21, 2010.  I know this is just a couple of weeks, but it really will make a huge difference.  By launching two weeks before Easter, that will give us two straight weeks where we can invite people back to special services (Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday).  These will be natural flowing “comeback” services and not forced or generated.  If we launched on Easter, there would be nothing to invite the people back to next week.  We would have to create something (which is fine) but why create something when we could have two natural flowing “comeback” services in Palm Sunday and Easter.  Second, by launching two weeks earlier, it will give us a little more time to build and gain momentum before the summer starts!  Picking up momentum is very important in the early stages of a new church.  Once summer rolls around, people begin taking vacations, school is out and parents are awfuly busy trying to keep in step with their kids.  So needless to say that summer time can be a momentum killer for new churches if that momentum isn’t strong, steady, and consistent.  We feel this early launch date will help us attain those goals.
  2. Demographics study: I have been spending countless hours and days working on getting to know the community of South Side.  South Side is where we will be launching Lifestone Church and by knowing the community in and out, we will be setting ourselves up for success.  A couple of things you can learn while studying demographics of a certain community; first, you find out who you will be reaching (cultures, people groups, races, gender, ages).  Second, you will find out specific needs (finances, jobs, housing, etc.).  I have learned so much about South Side over the last several weeks just by researching on the internet and talking with people in the community!
  3. South Side Neighborhood Group: This group exists for one reason only, and that is to serve the community with no strings attached.  We have a group that started several weeks ago who is meeting at a local bagel shop right on the main drag.  They have been teaching and planning outreaches that would target specific felt needs in the community.  For instance, yesterday the group brought brooms and bags and swept people’s sidewalks and driveways.  This is a tremendous opportunity for our people to show the love of Christ through their actions.  To show people that we genuinely care about them and love them.  At this point, our goal is not to get them to join a church, it’s to meet the felt needs of our community and make an impact in lives all accross South Side.  Our group is growing as we just had two new attendees this week.  Our group is growing and our passion for the South Side is growing too!
  4. MCM Network: Our church is and will continue to be connected to the Multi Church Movement (MCM Network).  This is a network of churches that was started by Jeff Leake who is the pastor of Allison Park Church.  Currently there are 15 churches in the network and Lifestone Church is one of them.  I had my first MCM pastors meeting this week and was able to give a report of the progress that we are currently making.  This network is a support system like nothing I have ever seen.  We are so thrilled to be supported by and connected with this awesome church and network!
  5. Fall/Winter Vision Tour: I am currently talking with pastors about dates to come speak at their churches for two reasons; First, to share the vision of Lifestone Church.  Second, to raise financial support for this new church that will impact the entire city of Pittsburgh!  We will be planting in the most revitalized and multi-cultural community in Pittsburgh.  Our vision as a church is to be a Life-giving people that bridge multiple cultures together and bring spiritual renewal through the cross of Jesus Christ!  I currently have some incredible opportunities lined up to share about Lifestone Church but I am most definitely looking for more.  If you are a pastor of a church and would like to connect, please contact me!  Maybe you aren’t a Lead Pastor or even a pastor at all, but would like to hear this vision shared at your church.  Just talk with your pastor and get me connected!  I would love to come talk about what God is up to!

Wow, that was a lot to write, but God is up to HUGE things and I don’t believe that there is anyone other than God who is more excited about this than I am.  I will continue to update all of you on the progress of Lifestone Church in the future, but for now I think I will take a breather!

South Side Community Group

In a couple of days, the vision for Lifestone Church will be taking a huge step in the “God” direction!  That’s right, the direction 6a00d8341d8bc053ef010534c45fd8970c-640witowards God’s ultimate plan and desire for our influence in the community of South Side.  This Saturday will be the very first informational gathering for our community group that will begin meeting in and serving the South Side.  This community group is actually the beginning phase of Lifestone Church and it’s ministry.  The purpose of the community group is to start with a core of people who’s desire is to reach out and serve the South Side.  This is not a Bible study or an exclusive discipleship course.  It is designed with the community in mind and heart.  The community group will meet once a week until the launch on April 4, 2010 (including four monthly preview services December-March) and during that time will plan and conduct outreaches and serving opportunities for our community.  We are praying for people to feel the call and tug of the Holy Spirit to join the team and get connected with the South Side community group!  Needless to say, this Saturday is a huge day!  My good friend, prayer partner, and pastor of church planting at Allison Park Church/Multi Church Movement Nick Poole, will be conducting and leading the meeting.

If you live in or around the city of Pittsburgh, especially in the community of South Side and would like to get involved and connected with this community group, please get in contact with me ASAP!  All you have to do is comment anywhere on this blog or the Lifestone Church Blog.  You can also email me directly by clicking on the email link in the side bar.

A New House to Build God’s House!

I have gone through some long and trecherous situations in my life, but none compared to finding our first house!  Last night was the culmination of our house searching because we agreed upon a price with the seller of a FANTASTIC home right in the heart of Pittsburgh.  We actually got the call from our realtor, Rachael Schafer, around 9:50pm last night which interrupted the last ten minutes of 24.  Once she called, I picked up the remote and tried to press pause but suddenly realized that I don’t have TIVO!!!!!  But this phone call was well worth it.  We are going through the never ending paper procedures, getting the loan from the bank and closing the deal as we speak, so it’s not complete, but it will be soon!

I can’t help but view this house as more than just a house.  To me, it represents the provision of God!  By God providing this great home for us, he is proving to us that he doesn’t call the equipped, but he equips the called!!! This process so far has been one God event after another, which I have to admit, has stretched my faith time and time again.  But you know what, God has stayed true to his word.  This new house is going to be the base station, if you will, for our growing family, ministry, friends, and much more!  This house is going to be a foundational piece in the formation of building Lifestone Church and creating a Life-Giving culture in and around the city of Pittsburgh!  I am so thankful that God sees the bigger picture!  All we have to do is obey the Holy Spirit tugs and follow his leading!

Thank you God for this new house you have provided us (I will post pictures soon)!

Thank you God for this new spiritual house being built in Pittsburgh…Lifestone Church!

What Will Lifestone Church Be Like???

I have had this question asked of me several times over the last few months “What will Lifestone Church look like?” and I thought I would try to give a little preview of what you would experience at Lifestone Church.  My wife and I have put together some key aspects of what we consider to be an effective church environment.  These four key aspects are very important to us and will be embedded into the everyday culture of Lifestone Church.  Our intentions are for every person who darkens the door of Lifestone Church to feel and experience this environment and atmosphere.

Attenders of Lifestone Church will have:

  1. A Relaxed Church Experience – We want people to feel as relaxed in church as they do in their home!  We believe by making dress comfortable/casual, always keeping people in the inside loop of what’s going on, and making our facility easy to get around and locate things, we can assist people in having a very relaxed and stress-free church experience!
  2. A Relational Church Experience – We want to create a relational hub that will propel people into conversation and communication that will impact their daily lives.  Church should be a relational experience for every person of every age!  Our hope is for people to instantly feel the relational connection with Lifestone Church and it’s community!
  3. A Relevant Church Experience – We want to be extremely relevant in three specific areas of our services: the Media, the Music, and the Message.  You will experience all types of high-quality/high-energy media formats in most parts of our services.  The music and worship will be of contemporary and modern styles.  And all the messages/series will be delivered in an applicable, biblical, and personal way!
  4. A Real Church Experience – We want to be a real community of Christ-followers who are open and transparent in our everyday lives!  People are fed up with fake churches and are looking for churches who possess real people, with real problems, being real open!  Our hope is that people will sense the genuine yet, spiritual nature of the people at Lifestone Church anddesire a real connection.

As we reach out to the unchurched people of our community, our hope is that they will feel welcomed into a relaxed, relational, relevant, and real church environment that will lead them to much more than just a “church” experience, but a “God” experience!

Sound like a church for you???  You know how to get a hold of us!

Winding Down to Rev Up!

This week we are trying to wind down from a very busy and hectic last week.  Last week was a tremendous opportunity for my pittsburghwfie and I to spend time in Pittsburgh and get many things accomplished as the launch date to Lifestone Church inches closer and closer.  Can you believe that in less than a year, Lifestone Church will be an official spiritual and relational presence in the city of Pittsburgh?  I can’t believe it is actually going to be a reality in less than a year!  I thought I would take a few minutes and break down our week to show you some awesome things God is up to:

  1. Church Planter’s Assessment – This was the final step to recieve the support, backing, and approval of the PennDel district of the Assemblies of God to plant a church.  By the grace of God we assessed very strong as church planters and are well on our way to impacting the city of Pittsburgh for Christ!
  2. Opportunities – While we were in town, I took the opportunity to visit with my mentor and spiritual father, David Thomas, Lead Pastor of Victory Christian Center in Lowellville, Ohio.  What a tremendous man of God he is and it is always so good to talk and spend time together!  During our time together, God has opened up three opportunities for me to share our vision and calling to the city of Pittsburgh.  I spent an extended period of time with Victory’s Masters Commission students sharing what God is up to in Pittsburgh, and this coming October and November I have been invited to share at Victory Christian Center and a Pastors/Leaders conference called the “NXL Conference”.  I am very excited about these opportunities to share what God is doing in Pittsburgh!  I am so thankful for these oppotunities, but I am praying for more of these encounters to occur over the next year!  If you are a pastor or maybe you attend a church and would like to have me come and share our vision for Lifestone Church and Pittsburgh, please email or comment me and we can talk!
  3. Details, Details, DetailsI was able to connect with the leadership of the Multi-Church Movement, Nick Poole and work out a bunch of necessary details as we will be transitioning in less than two months!  God is a God of detail, is he not?  We have been believing that God will work out all of the intricate details of this entire process and after this past week, He is well on his way!  Thank you God for your provision!
  4. HousingWe searched long and hard for three out of the six days we were there!  We only found one house that “WOWed” us and of course we put an offer in.  Only to find out, three other offers went in just before ours on the same day!  One offer was accepted and unfortunately it wasn’t ours!  Big bummer!  But that means the perfect house for us is still out there (we will be heading back this weekend to look at more)!
  5. Church LocationNick Poole and I spent an afternoon in the SouthSide and ate lunch at one of my favorite places, Primanti Bros.  Great Pittsburgh food!  We also met a business owner in the community and established a relationship there.  Not to mention we searched and found several potential Lifestone Church meeting locations!  God open up the right one for us!
  6. Launch Team MemberI also spent some time with a future launch team member!  He is a great guy and is going to be a tremendous asset to our team!

God is “no doubt about it” up to some huge stuff and I feel so honored that he would choose my family and I to have a role in transforming the city of Pittsburgh for Christ! If you are interested in becoming a launch team member or want to know more about Lifestone Church, please email me (you will find a link to my email in the side bar) any time!  I would love to talk with you!

It has only just begun!

New Launch Team Member Update!

I want to take a moment to follow up with an announcement I made a month ago about welcoming a new launch team member to Lifestone Church.  Now, is probably a more adequate time to introduce this person than any other time for many reasons that I won’t get into right now.  This new team member will be a huge boost for us!  Not only will this addition be a tremendous blessing to the church, but most importantly it will be a tremendous blessing to our family.  Yes that is right, in October we will be welcoming our second child into the world!  For right now we are calling it “baby Thomas” since it is still too early to know the sex, but needless to say, we are grateful and honored to be parents once again!  This will definitely be a big year for us as we are planning on buying our first home upon our arrival in Pittsburgh, we will be having a baby in October, and we will be pastoring and planting a church.  What a season this will be!

Keep my wife and baby Thomas in your prayers as they both endure this long process of what we call, a miracle!

Planting for Growth

Why do we plant churches?  What is our goal?  Purpose?  Agenda?

Over the last two years, God has submerged my heart into the fast paced current of church planting.  I have talked to church planters, leaders, researched statistics, read books, listened to messages, the whole nine yards and I have to say, I have heard and experienced some very good stuff!  Successful stuff!  Trendy stuff!  Popular stuff!  Edgy stuff and so on.  But all in all, what is the purpose of church planting?  Is it a current fad that has become so “IN” that people have fallen to the drawing of the flesh rather than obeying the tug of the Holy Spirit?  Unfortunately, this might be the case in some situations, but true church planters plant for three reasons: to invest in people, to invest in the church, to invest in the Kingdom!  In other words, church planters are called to initiate GROWTH!

Three “Growth Goals” that should be the heart and soul of any church plant (These are in no specific order):

  1. Growth Goal #1 – Spiritual Growth (individual) – This is the constant and continual transformation of an individuals heart towards the things of God.  Giving opportunities for people to grow and mature in their relationships with the Lord is key in a church starting and growing healthy.  This is where you must create a culture in your church that breeds spiritual growth.  Everyone’s church culture might look and feel different.  No surprise there!  This dynamic is simply about creating an environment where people can get in tune with God on a regular basis and grow in him.  If an individual truly wants to grow spiritually, they can grow on their own, but they will grow deeper and faster in community! Something important to remember: You might find it very difficult to impact a community and generations whose hearts are away from the Lord, if personal spiritual growth is not occurring at all levels of the church.  Focus on growing BIG people!
  2. Growth Goal #2 – Church (corporate) – Although ministry is not about numbers, each number in the church and community represents a person.  Not only should our goal be to assist people in growing their spiritual lives and hearts towards God, but an important growth goal of ours should also be to impact as many people as we possibly can for Christ!  In other words, reaching the masses (numbers).  As we witness to, befriend, laugh with, hug, cry with, and give to people in our community, the more people we impact and the more growth the church experiences!  Don’t be afraid to discuss numbers, WHEN YOUR PRIORITIES ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE! An important growth goal of planting a church should be to grow corporately!
  3. Growth Goal #3 – Kingdom Growth (eternal) – When you commit to playing an active role in growing and advancing the Kingdom of God, the other two “growth goals” will automatically fall into place.  They will automatically be passions and desires of those people and churches who are “Kingdom Minded”.  Being “Kingdom Minded” is more than just going on missions trips, it’s about changing our view Christianity from a religion to individual relationships, the church, the world, and why we do what we do.  It is the (Matthew 6:33 principle) “Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you”.  This means, building a church just to build a church……NO WAY…… it’s about possessing and launching a vision for growth (individual, corporate, Kingdom of God) into as many communities as we possibly can.  By committing to grow BIG people, you are advancing the Kingdom of God and by committing to grow God’s local/corporate church, you are advancing the Kingdom of God.

GOD LOVES GROWTH. He made people to grow physically so why can’t they grow spiritually?  If He wants people to grow spiritually, why can’t the church they attend grow physically?  If the church is growing spiritually and physically, then the Kingdom of God is growing!  It’s a wonderful union between God and His creation!

We plant churches to GROW!

Calling – God first/man second

Early next month, my wife and I will be traveling to Mechanicsburg, PA to be interviewed by the church planting leadership of the PennDel district of the Assemblies of God. This is the final step in approval to plant a church in this specific district. We are very excited yet we are also nervous not knowing what to expect. On the flipside, we are very confident that the Lord has called us and set us apart to lead this church. Monday, April 6th is the date to be exact. We would appreciate your prayers as we continue the journey of pursuing God’s dream for the city of Pittsburgh!

I am so honored to be a part of a fellowship that takes church planting very seriously! These steps that we are taking towards approval to plant a church are all necessary, but we all must remind ourselves in times like these that God’s approval is primary! I am not trying to belittle leadership (uumm..I am one), organizations (uumm..I am a committed to one), positions (uumm..I have one), and standards (uumm..I agree with them).  But when you think about it, everything is secondary to the Lord’s affirmation! Isn’t it?? If the Lord is truly affirming something, His servants will know it is Him! In other words, if this calling is really inspired by God (uuummmm yeah!), our district leadership in cooperation with the Holy Spirit will recognize this same affirmation! I think this really shows us God’s desire to cooperate with man in building and advancing His Kingdom!

Approval from orgzanizations, ministries, leaders, etc. are all very important and absolutely necessary in Kingdom work, BUT, man’s approval and critque means nothing if the blessing and calling of the Lord is not in place!

Remember, God FIRST, man SECOND!

Authentic Community

Community is not just where you plant your church, it’s who you are!  Building and developing “authentic community” (real lasting relationships) is vastly important in planting a church because where authentic community is nurtured, that’s where lives are changed.  In the current church plant we are involved in, we have a saying, “we are doing life together”.  I think this represents a very real dynamic that happens when authentic community is a main priority in the church.  People aren’t just “existing” in that church but they are “doing” life together.  People aren’t just “on their own” but they are doing life together.  An authentic community is intentional about relationships and seeks to develop and change the culture of the community they live in through those relationships.

Our vision for Lifestone Church is “to create a Life-Giving culture in and around the city of Pittsburgh”.  One way that we will attempt to really create spiritual and relational life in our community is by applying the concept of “doing life together” in an authentic and real way!  Actually viewing and living our lives with the God-given purpose of being relational.  In my opinion, this is the “x-factor” in ministry!  Or better yet, you could call it the “IT-factor”.  When a church as “IT” (authentic community) at it’s core, that foundation is solid as a rock and ready to build upon.

It truly is amazing what God can do with people who believe in the power of relationships and community!
